Athletics
Middle School Athletics has moved to a tryout/non-tryout model to better address the needs of our athletes while understanding the challenges of transportation and availability of facilities.
Interscholastic sports will be a competitive environment designed for athletes typically having an established skill set and familiarity with a sport. During Interscholastic Sports, athletes will compete against other schools in the Lake Washington School District. Interscholastic sports (with one exception each season) will follow a tryout model where a limited number of athletes will qualify for a Varsity or JV team. More information about the tryout and selection process will be made available from the Athletic Director and/or coaches once the season starts.
Intramural sports will be designed for skill building and connecting with peers. During Intramural Sports, students will only compete against other RHMS students. Intramural sports follow the NO CUT model and can have unlimited participants. This is a great way to get involved with middle school athletics in a positive way, without the risk of being cut or excluded!
Registration for each season or session will open approximately one month before the sport’s start date. All registration is done through the district’s online athletics platform Final Forms.
Registration for the first season of Interscholastic Sports will open up on August 1st.
All student athletes must have a valid sports physical on file, with the Medical Clearance Form* signed by a physician and uploaded into Final Forms. Sports physicals are valid for two years. Students are ineligible and not permitted to participate in Interscholastic Sports without this signed form on file. *This form is recommended but not required for Intramural Sports.

Not making a tryout team
Students not selected for a Varsity or JV team will have the opportunity to instead participate in the non-tryout sport for that particular season. Tryouts will count toward the eight practices required for eligibility in competition. (For example, a student that tries out for basketball but does not get selected for V/JV can switch to cross country that season.) More information about tryout and selection processes will be made available from the Athletic Director and/or coaches once the season starts.
Fees and payment
The participation fee for Interscholastic Sports is $125 per sport.
Tryout Sports: Students do not need to prepay for tryout sports. Payment will be due one week after team selections have been made. Failure to pay within this window will result in a student being ineligible to participate until payment is made.
Non-Tryout Sports: Students should prepay for non-tryout sports. The payment window will open with registration and will close at the end of the first week of practice. Failure to pay within this window will result in a student being ineligible to participate until payment is made.
The participation fee for Intramural Sports is $35 per sport.
*Students with outstanding athletic fines from a previous year or season will not be eligible to tryout or participate until fines have been paid.
Practices
Programming takes place immediately after school on Mon/Tues and Thur/Fri. There is never any activity on Wednesdays. Practice times range from one to two hours. The Athletic Director and/or coaches will communicate season schedules, including specific practice times. All practices are closed to the community.
Attendance
Attendance is required at tryouts. Students may miss up to one tryout day and still be considered for team selections. Full commitment is required for tryout sports. Multiple unexcused absences can result in removal from the team. Students are not permitted to miss RHMS athletic events for outside club/sports activities.
Athletes are required to participate in seven practices before being eligible for the first competition. Regardless of the reason for an absence, students must be physically present and participating in practice for it to count towards eligibility. Once an athlete has been present and participated in seven practices they are eligible for all season competitions. (*Wrestling requires nine practices for eligibility.)
Students must be present for half of the school day (3 out of 6 periods) to be eligible for same day practices and competitions.
Transportation
Families are required to make transportation arrangements for getting students home following all after-school athletic participation. Bus transportation for away games will only be one-way; we will continue to provide a bus to our away destination. There will be no return bus back to RHMS from away games. Parents will be expected to pick their student up or coordinate a ride home for their student immediately following the conclusion of our away games. There is no transportation involved with Intramural Sports.
Sports only students
Students who attend Choice, Private, Online and Home School programs are eligible to participate in athletic programs at their neighborhood school as a Sports Only Student. If you are an alternative school student and would like to register for a RHMS sport, you will need to first email the Athletic Director, Rod Smith, with the following info: student name, name of choice school you attend, and the sport for which you wish to register. That information will allow us to update the student profile and you will be able to register for sports and access the sport specific forms through FinalForms. Sports Only Students must register/re-register with their resident school each year they wish to participate.
Please reach out to Rod Smith, RHMS Athletic Director, with any questions.

Need a Sports Physical?
Take the Athletic Participation/Physical Form to your child's physician. Most primary care physicians will fill out the forms free of charge if they have seen your child within 6 months of your request.
Walk-in sports physicals: If your family is new to the area, or your child does not have a primary care physician, an option is to visit a walk-in urgent care that provides walk-in sports physicals. Please keep in mind that these clinics charge a fee for this service.
