Sixth Grade Courses

Sixth Grade Required Courses

English/Language Arts 6

One Year

Sixth grade language arts students develop their vocabulary and reading comprehension skills in a variety of literary and informational texts through both in-class and independent reading experiences. They learn to evaluate texts and authors’ purpose by sharing their reading experiences with others. All 6th grade students take part in a novel study using The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt. The genres for 6th grade include fiction, non-fiction and poetry. In writing, students write to different audiences and for different purposes. They
practice the writing forms of narrative, expository and argument with claims by applying the writing process and the traits of effective writing. The strand focus for writing is generating ideas and organizing them.

Social Studies 6

One Year

Sixth grade social studies focuses on ancient civilizations. As they learn about ancient civilizations, students study characteristics of cultures and regions, different forms of government and economic systems, and the impact of ancient civilizations on world history. They use their background knowledge of history, economics, civics and geography, and apply important social studies skills as they read, research, explore and learn about the world around them and their place in it.

Math 6

One Year

In this course, students focus on four critical areas: (1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; (2) completing the understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of numbers to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; (3) writing, interpreting and using expressions and equations; and (4) developing an understanding of statistical thinking by describing and summarizing numerical data sets. Students also build on their work with area by reasoning about relationships among shapes to determine area, surface area and volume.

Integrated Science 6

One Year

This science course builds on physical, earth and life science concepts and processes learned in kindergarten through fifth grade. Throughout middle school, students investigate physical, earth and life science topics, and plan and conduct their own investigations, devise data tables, analyze data and communicate their findings. In grades 6-8, students learn to think critically and logically to make connections between prior science knowledge and evidence produced from investigations, models and system thinking.

Fitness 6

One Year

In middle school, students develop competence in skillful movement in game situations and in a variety of recreational activities. They transition from modified versions of movement forms to more complex applications across all types of activities. Students demonstrate the ability to assume responsibility for guiding their own learning as they apply their knowledge and abilities to create a practice plan to improve performance in selected physical activities. Students are able to set goals, track progress and participate in these activities to
improve health-related fitness.

Sixth Grade Elective Courses

Royal Exploration

One Year

Do you have a hard time making up your mind? In this course you will have the opportunity to explore pathways to the elective classes you can take in seventh and eighth grade. Experience a quarter long sampling of courses in Consumer Sciences, Digital Media, Visual Arts and Gateway to Technology. You may discover a hidden passion or confirm your commitment to an area of interest. Whether you are ready or reluctant to try new things, this class is for you!

Exploratory Art
Students will gain an understanding of the elements and principles of design as they create original drawings, paintings and sculptures. They will be introduced to a variety of media, including tempera/acrylic paint, colored pencil and clay. The formal techniques of visual art will be taught and creativity is encouraged.

Exploratory Foods
In this course, students will become familiar with the kitchen, while developing a basic understanding of the importance of food and kitchen safety. Students will be actively engaged in the preparation of a variety of foods with a focus on culture and nutrients.

Exploratory Digital Media
In this course you will get to have a hands-on experience with all of the tools and resources that the Media Lab has to offer. Get an introduction to Photography, Video and Animation with the easy-to-follow projects that introduce new tools and how to integrate them into to your core classes. Also, become familiar with district sponsored resources such as Britannica Images, Discovery Education Streaming and the Microsoft Productivity Suite. Come prepared for fun, new learning and excitement!

Exploratory Technology
In this course, students will engage in inquiry and Next Generation Science Standards-based lessons as they take on the roles of mechanical engineers, software engineers, electrical engineers and data scientists. They will explore concepts of electricity and magnetism as they work with microcontrollers and design IoT (Internet of Things) devices to collect data visualized on Excel. Students will also be introduced to robotics, programming, CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and 3-D printing as they progress through course studies.

Concert Choir

One Year

This course is performance based, designed for the novel singer who wants to join in the fun of singing with other singers and further the study of vocal/choral technique. Concert Choir will emphasize vocal production, sight-reading and producing high quality large ensemble performances. Concert music and vocal technique will be used as a means for developing the ability to think, learn, communicate, collaborate and enjoy music with fellow musicians as a way to connecting with a smaller community. Concert attendance is required and fun! All participants in this music course are required to purchase an ASB card. Student participation in fundraisers may also be necessary to help fund fields trips.

Concert Band

One Year

Concert Band is the place for you if you played in Elementary Band and want to further your skills on your instrument. Students will become better musicians as they learn concert music, pop music, marches and pep band music. As a part of the school band, students will perform at concerts and on field trips. Concert attendance is required as well as participation in all performances and field trips. This class will study through the book "Tradition of Excellence Book 2." Any students interested in starting a band instrument as a beginner will play as a member of the Concert Band for a full year (beginners are expected to put in extra practice time or take lessons outside of class if needed). Note: piano and guitar are not instruments used in band and cannot be accommodated by this class. Students must provide their own instruments. All participants in this music course are required to purchase an ASB card. Student participation in fundraisers may also be necessary to help fund field trips.

Concert Orchestra

One Year

This course is for any grade level student who would like to begin playing a Violin, Viola, Cello or String Bass, or for students of any grade level who have previously participated in an elementary string orchestra program or have taken private lessons for at least one year. The school year is filled with field trips traveling to performance opportunities! Here is an opportunity for students to gain confidence in public performance, develop self-discipline and responsibility, plus organizational skills in an ensemble setting, while experiencing fun with friends in quality music performances. Intermediate concert music and instrumental technique will be emphasized as a means for developing the ability to think and learn, as well as to communicate, collaborate and enjoy music with fellow musicians as a way to connect to a smaller community. Regular home practice and concert attendance are required. All participants in this music course are required to purchase an ASB card. Student participation in fundraisers may also be necessary to help fund field trips.

Jazz Band

One Year

Jazz Band expands on the skills learned in Band/Orchestra and applies those skills to many jazz styles such as swing, blues, Latin and funk. The Rose Hill Jazz Band performs at school events, on field trips and for concerts. The focus of this course is to study and experience different jazz styles and to perform at our school and in the community. This class meets before school daily and students must also be enrolled in Band or Orchestra during the day in order to be eligible to participate in Jazz Band. Note: Drum set and guitar players are selected by audition. All participants in this music course are required to purchase an ASB card. Student participation in fundraisers may also be necessary to help fund field trips.

Seventh Grade Required Courses

English/Language Arts 7

One Year

Seventh grade language arts integrates writing, reading, speaking and technology skills. Students read fiction and non-fiction and study the elements of short stories, plays and poetry. They learn reading strategies for understanding textbooks and reference sources. The strand focus for student writing is on organization. Texts include: Freak the Mighty; The Outsiders.

U.S. History 1

One Year

Seventh grade social studies is a year-long course which integrates writing, reading, speaking, listening and technology skills with the study of U.S. History from the Revolutionary War through the Civil War and Reconstruction. The focus is on civics, geography, cultural development and human-environmental interaction. As part of this course, students will complete the state-mandated Developed Assessment called “Constitutional Issues.”

Integrated Science 7

One Year

This science course builds on physical, earth, and life science concepts and processes learned in kindergarten through fifth grade. Throughout middle school, students investigate physical, earth and life science topics, and plan and conduct their own investigations, devise data tables, analyze data and communicate their findings.
In grades 6-8, students learn to think critically and logically to make connections between prior science knowledge and evidence produced from investigations, models and system thinking.

Math 7

One Year

In this course, students build on their understanding from 6th grade by focusing on four critical areas: (1) developing an understanding of and applying proportional relationships; (2) developing an understanding
of operations with rational numbers (explaining the rules for adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing with negative numbers) and working with expressions and linear equations; (3) solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and working with two- and three-dimensional shapes to solve
problems involving area, surface area and volume; and (4) drawing inferences about populations based on samples.

Algebra 1

The fundamental purpose of this course is to formalize and extend the mathematics that students learned in the middle grades. The course focuses on five critical areas: (1) developing fluency writing, interpreting and translating between various forms of linear equations and inequalities and simple exponential functions, and using them to solve problems; (2) comparing and contrasting linear and exponential functions, translating between different representations, using function notation and interpreting arithmetic sequences as linear functions and geometric sequences as exponential functions; (3) using regression techniques to describe linear relationships quantitatively and making judgments about the appropriateness of linear models; (4) extending the laws of exponents to rational exponents, seeing structure in and creating quadratic and exponential expressions, and solving equations, inequalities and systems of equations involving quadratic expressions; and (5) comparing quadratic, linear and exponential functions to model phenomenon. They also identify the real solutions of quadratic equations as the zeroes of a related quadratic function and expand their experience to more specialized functions – absolute value, step and those that are piecewise-defined.

Health

One Semester

In Health class, a strong emphasis is placed on personal responsibility and that healthy choices promote lifelong wellness. Students have an understanding of the origins and causes of diseases, including the relationship between family history and certain health risks. They begin to relate short and long-term consequences of health choices and apply health skills to specific personal, family and community health concerns. Students learn to refine critical-thinking skills to avoid unsafe situations, analyze health information and products, and maintain healthy relationships. Students begin to investigate health in the broader context of community.

Eighth Grade Required Courses

English/Language Arts 8

One Year

Eighth grade language arts integrates writing, reading, speaking and technology skills. Emphasis is placed on citing text-evidence and giving commentary for both literary and nonfiction texts. The strand focus for student writing is on ideas and content. Texts include: Seven Habits for Highly Effective Teens; Anne Frank; To Kill a Mockingbird; A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

U.S. History 2 / Washington State History

One Year

Eighth grade combines a fall-semester study of Washington State History and Government with a spring-semester focus on twentieth century U.S. History. This combination provides additional connections for students as they study such topics as the growth of the West, giants of industry, immigration, social reforms, imperialism, twentieth century conflicts and the events of more recent decades. It is important for students to recognize that they MUST PASS eighth grade U.S. History in order to meet the high school graduation requirement for Washington State history. As part of this course, students will complete the state-mandated Developed Assessment called “Causes of Conflict.”

Integrated Science 8

One Year

This science course builds on physical, earth and life science concepts and processes learned in kindergarten through fifth grade. Throughout middle school, students investigate physical, earth and life science topics, and plan and conduct their own investigations, devise data tables, analyze data and communicate their findings.

In this course, instructional time focuses on three critical areas: (1) formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and systems of equations; (2) grasping the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships; (3) analyzing two- and three-dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity and congruence, and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem.

The fundamental purpose of this course is to formalize and extend students’ geometric experiences from the middle grades. The course focuses on six critical areas: (1) establishing triangle congruence based on rigid motions and formal constructions and solving problems and proving theorems about triangles, quadrilaterals and other polygons; (2) building a formal understanding of similarity and applying similarity to right triangle trigonometry and the Pythagorean Theorem, and using the Laws of Sines and Cosines to find missing
measures; (3) informal explanations of circumference, area and volume formulas; (4) building on the Pythagorean Theorem to find distances and using a rectangular coordinate system to verify geometric
relationships; (5) proving basic theorems about circles; and (6) computing and interpreting theoretical and experimental probabilities of compound events, and using probability to make informed decisions.

Food & Culinary Foundations

One Semester

Throughout our lives we develop a relationship with food! Food plays a significant role in how we perform in daily activities and it is important to learn and value the significance of our daily nutrition. Becoming independent in the kitchen, in meal planning and as a consumer, is an essential skill to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Throughout this course you will acquire skills to master the kitchen and provide the essential nourishment your body needs to maintain good health, while enjoying the foods along the way! There is a $20.00 course fee which helps to pay for food used in labs.

Consumer Life Skills

One Semester

It has become increasingly important for today’s younger generations to be prepared for the basic as well as unexpected challenges of living independently. The work force, family composition and society
as a whole has endured rapid changes that make living well complicated. Young people starting out on their own have to deal with many practical matters. They have to manage their finances for the present
and the future, plan for career changes, manage their food needs, select insurance and learn to cooperate and work with a diverse population. Life Skills is an exploratory course which focuses on the
knowledge, attitudes and skills needed to successfully live independently. There is a $15.00 course fee which helps to pay for food used in labs.

Fine Arts Electives - Visual

Visual Arts

One Semester

Discover and develop the artist in you! This semester course introduces students to the elements of art: Shape, Line, Mass, Color, Texture and Value and we explore many different art mediums. Students will
see how these elements work together to create a beautiful piece of art. Several projects will enable students to “see” like an artist and develop their creativity and imagination. There is a $20 materials fee for this class.

Ceramics

One Semester

This class is designed for students who have an interest in working with clay. It gives students experiences in making functional as well as sculptural pieces, using a variety of techniques. Well thought out forms and good craftsmanship are emphasized. Students will create works of art in clay utilizing the processes of hand building using coils and slabs. Students will also glaze their projects and learn about the method used to fire their works. Students who have taken this class before are free to take it again, as projects are not repeated. There is a $20 materials fee for this class.

Symphonic Band is an advanced band course where students will become better musicians as they learn new concert music, pop music, marches, and pep band music. As part of the school band, students will perform at concerts and on field trips. Concert attendance is required as well as participation in all performances and field trips. Students in this class learn individual instrumental technique and develop large ensemble skills. Students will study through "Tradition of Excellence Book 3." Note: Students must provide their own instrument. All participants in this music course are required to purchase an ASB card. Student participation in fundraisers may also be necessary to help fund field trips.

Symphonic Orchestra

One Year

Concert Orchestra

This course is designed to “move it up to the next level” for the advanced string player. Participation in the Concert Orchestra last year is a prerequisite for Symphonic Orchestra unless the student can
demonstrate basic sight-reading skill, beginning theory and technical ability. Advanced concert music and instrumental technique will be emphasized as a means for developing the ability to think, learn,
communicate, collaborate and enjoy music with fellow musicians as a way to connect to a smaller community. If you are not sure which ensemble to join, contact the orchestra teacher. You can set up an audition to play for her and she will help you decide which ensemble is best for you. Teacher permission with possible auditions are required. All participants in this music course are required to purchase an ASB card. Student participation in fundraisers may also be necessary to help fund fields trips.

Wind Ensemble

One Year

Experience playing in middle school band

Wind Ensemble is the most advanced band course for 8th graders. Students will become better musicians as they learn new concert music, pop music, marches, and pep band music. This course is designed to move it up to the next level for the advanced instrumentalist. As a part of the school band, students will perform at concerts and on field trips. Students in this class learn individual technique and develop large ensemble skills. Students will play more advanced music and will study through the book "Foundations for a Superior Performance." Concert attendance is required as well as participation in all performances and field trips. Note: Students must provide their own instrument. All participants in this music course are required to purchase an ASB card. Student participation in fundraisers may also be necessary to help fund field trips.

Chamber Ensemble

One Year

Prerequisite
Middle School Orchestra

This course is designed to “move you up to the next level” for the advanced string player. It is now time to stretch your well earned ability and reach for the stars in this ensemble. Participation in the Symphonic Orchestra or a middle school Orchestra last year is a prerequisite for Chamber Ensemble unless the student can demonstrate intermediate sight-reading skill, theory and technical ability. Advanced orchestra music and instrumental technique will be emphasized as a means for developing the ability to think, learn, communicate, collaborate and enjoy music with fellow musicians as a way to connect to a smaller community. If you are not sure which ensemble to join, contact the orchestra teacher. You can set up an audition to play for her and she will help you decide which ensemble is best for you. All participants in this music course are required to purchase an ASB card. Student participation in fundraisers may also be necessary to help fund fields trips.

Jazz Band

One Year

Jazz Band expands on the skills learned in Band/Orchestra and applies those skills to many jazz styles such as swing, blues, Latin and funk. Technology Electives

Digital Photography

One Semester

In this class you will learn how to take magnificent pictures with one of our 12 DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras. Learn all about how to adjust your camera for light and subject matter. You will also
learn about the different genres of photography such as sports, still life, portrait and close-ups. Learn how and when to use different types of lenses for your portraits, sports photography or landscapes.
Also, you will learn how take to your photos to the next level using Adobe Creative Suite. Create posters, flyers, cards and amazing artwork as your finished product. Make buttons, key chains, canvas
frames, glass mosaic pictures and much, much more. The valuable skills learned in this class carry over to your regular classes! You can use some of your lab time to work on projects from another class.
Digital Photography is the class for you! There is a $10.00 materials fee for this class.

Digital Video

One Semester

In this class you will learn how to use a Digital Video camera to capture video in unique and different ways and then build an amazing movie using Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Audition
and Adobe Flash. Edit your video footage in Adobe Premiere and then use After Effects to put in amazing special effects and actions that can only be done with such powerful software. Finish your production by adding in your own custom sound effects and audio with Adobe Audition. And don’t forget about animation, too! We will learn the basics of Adobe Flash to create your own animations and stories that can be included in your final videos. These skills carry over to your regular classes! You can use some of your lab time to work on projects that support your other classes. Digital Video is the class for you! There is a $10.00 materials fee for this class.

Advanced Digital Media

One Semester

Prerequisites
Digital Photography or Digital Video

In this class you will take your Best of Best skills in either of the Digital Photography or Digital Video classes and pursue your passion as a photographer or videographer, or both! In this class you will extend and enhance your knowledge of Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Audition, Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Be a part of the crew that creates our school wide video magazine – What’s Up! Rose Hill. Write, take video and edit your own stories or special features to be included in the final production and presentation to the entire school. And don’t forget that these skills carry over to your regular classes! You can use some of your lab time to work on projects from other class as well. Advanced Digital Media - This is the class for you! There is a $10.00 materials fee for this class.

PLTW GTT Automation & Robotics (Robotics Foundations 1)

One Semester

Rose Hill Middle School and Lake Washington High School have now adopted the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) curriculum as its STEM signature pathway. PLTW is the leading provider of rigorous and innovative Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education curricular programs used in middle and high schools across the U.S. Students completing Robotics courses at RHMS can continue the STEM pathway at Lake Washington High School where they will have opportunities to earn college credit and make connections with local business and industries. Topics of study include: Programming Scribbler Robots with Python Computer Programming language, 3-D design and modeling using Autodesk Inventor, and programming and building LEGO NXT robots using the NXT-G graphical interface. Students taking this course will have home access to Autodesk Inventor free of charge. There is a $10.00 materials fee for this class.

Robotics Foundations 2

French 1

Grade 8 – One Year

2.5 GPA for first semester in seventh grade and a “C” or higher first semester grade in English/Language Arts 7

The goal of this course is to introduce students to the study of the French language, stressing the four basic skills: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. The skills will be learned by practicing
pronunciation, studying vocabulary and grammar. The students will also engage in dialogues and conversations in order to practice speaking. Culture will be studied by exploring music, everyday customs, history and geography. A world language course taken in the eighth grade may satisfy one
year of the university entrance requirement if the second year is completed in high school. Please refer to individual university requirements. There may be a workbook fee required for this course.

Spanish 1

Additional Electives

Leadership

One Semester

Leadership is a one semester class for anyone looking to become a better leader. Students in this class learn how to improve their communication skills, character, personal growth and how to build strong
relationships and teams. Students work on planning school activities while learning about different leadership styles and practicing valuable communication skills. This class is mandatory for all ASB
officers, but is open to all students.

Speech and Debate

One Semester

Speech and Debate is a one-semester introductory course that covers a variety of styles of public speaking and formal debate. Students will experience impromptu public speaking, historical speech (commentary), Shakespearean monologues, speech critique, debate and mock trial. Throughout the semester students will work on developing vocal confidence through practice that will increase the effectiveness of presentations both in further classroom education and in global career choices.

Study Skills

One Semester

If you have trouble with homework, testing and organization, this course will help you be a more successful student. Strategies that will be focused on include: organization, calendars/planners, goal
setting, prioritizing, test-taking skills, positive presentation, self-advocacy and other pertinent study skills.

AVID

One Year

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a rigorous course designed for motivated and determined students to make them college and career ready. This course will focus on building self-confidence, communication skills in working with peers as well as build college ready academic skills so that students can experience greater success in their current classes. AVID students will learn habits of mind and cognitive routines proven to help them succeed in the high school curriculum and college such as peer collaboration skills, questioning strategies, goal setting, note-taking as a process, organization, time-management and self-advocacy. Another primary goal of AVID is to close the achievement gap by providing greater access to the most rigorous courses and college for all students. Interested students will be given an application to complete once registration forms are turned in.

Transition Center Peer Mentor

Starting in school year 2018-2019

One Semester

This elective class is for responsible students willing to be a positive role model and assist students in their Special Education (Transition Center) classes. Peer mentors work directly with students in the Transition Center program and will be placed in classes according to their strengths and preferences. Subjects including: reading, writing, math, social skills, functional life skills, and helping the Transition Center students in their elective classes (Fitness, Art, etc.).

Special Programs

English Language Learners (ELL)

English Language Learners (ELL) is for students who pre-qualify for the ELL program. The main goal is to develop English language proficiency while developing academics at grade level in an environment where language and culture are recognized as valuable resources for learning. The ELL class focuses on these domains: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

ELL classes are separated by language level based off student’s language assessment score on the WELPA (Washington English Language Proficiency Assessment).

Levels:
Level 1 - Beginner
Level 2 - Intermediate
Level 3 - Advanced
Level 4 - Transitional

Extended Literacy and Math Classes

At Rose Hill Middle School, additional staffing and learning resources are available for identified students who need assistance in the areas of language arts and mathematics. Students are identified using multiple points of information including test scores and teacher recommendations regarding the student’s skills and ability level.

Extended Literacy and Math classes serve students who have not met a Level III or Level IV standard on either of our state’s fifth, sixth, or seventh grade SBA in the areas of math or reading. Additionally, students in these classes will also have an individual Student Learning Plan (SLP) that will be designed to support their learning throughout the school year.

As a school committed to the success of our students, we are pleased to be able to provide them an additional language arts and/or mathematics class to ensure their academic success. The instruction in this additional course will not take the place of their core language arts or mathematics class, but will supplement the instruction that will be provided in their regularly scheduled class. Teachers will work together to enhance their knowledge of our students’ skills and attitudes, thereby improving their ability to communicate effectively with families.

We realize that the addition of this class may lead to the possibility for your student to be concerned or disappointed that their elective options will be reduced. Often times, this elective reduction will only impact one class, yet if students qualify in both mathematics and language arts, a parent could request the replacement of both electives.

As parents and educators, we must share in the responsibility that ensures our student’s commitment to earn their high school diploma. Beginning with the graduating class of 2019, students are required to pass the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) in English/Language Arts and Math in order to be eligible to receive their high school graduation diploma. Our students must recognize that their high school diploma is essential and that together, we are dedicated to providing students the type of learning opportunities that will make their lifetime success a reality!

Special Education

Special education courses at Rose Hill provide specially designed instruction in basic skill areas. Students who qualify for special education services in the areas of math, reading, written language, or organization are offered regularly scheduled courses in a small group setting. A research-based curriculum in each course provides remediation in that basic skill area. The aim of this remediation is to offer students strategies and skills which will help them to be successful in the general education classroom and strive toward district and state standards.

Rose Hill students with developmental or physical difficulties will have individualized programs designed to meet students’ specific needs. These programs will be developed through the IEP process by
specialists, parents, and general education faculty in order to meet developmental needs while involving each student in the Rose Hill community.

Child Find

Child Find is a federal requirement for the purpose of locating, evaluating, and identifying students aged birth to 21 years with a suspected disability who reside within the boundaries of the Lake Washington School District and are currently not receiving special education services. Child Find services are conducted throughout the year in the Lake Washington School District through the guidance team process. If you have a child, (age birth to 21) and are concerned about his/her language/communication skills, motor skills, intellectual, social, emotional,
and/or physical skills, please contact the school and ask for the special education teacher, school psychologist, or other guidance team member.
